Interview

STAR method examples

Four practice answers for common interview questions, each split into Situation, Task, Action, and Result. These examples were written for this page. They are not quotes from a real interview.

Tell me about a time a handoff went wrong.

Situation
The night crew left a shared sheet, and three people had typed into the same row.
Task
I was asked to make the morning queue readable before the stand-up.
Action
I decided to replace the sheet with a short form that asked for the owner, the blocker, and the next step.
Result
The form shipped the next Monday, and the stand-up stopped opening with a hunt for the sheet.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate.

Situation
A teammate wanted to ship a new menu the same week the checkout button was already moving.
Task
I needed to keep the checkout change on the calendar without dismissing the menu idea.
Action
I called a ten minute walkthrough, wrote the checkout risk on a card, and offered the menu the following week.
Result
We kept the checkout date, and the menu shipped the week after with its own check.

Tell me about a time you learned a tool on the job.

Situation
The team moved the weekly notes into a tracker I had not used.
Task
I had to file my own items before Friday's look at the board.
Action
I wrote three real items from that week into the tracker and asked one person to point at what I had mislabeled.
Result
By the second Friday my items were in the right columns, and I stopped bringing a side list.

Tell me about a time you had to cut scope.

Situation
A launch list had twelve items and the date did not move.
Task
My job was to name what could wait without hiding the cut.
Action
I sorted the list into what a first user would touch and what could wait a week, then said the cut out loud in the planning meeting.
Result
Four items moved to the next week, and the launch day used the shorter list.

Are these from real interviews?

No. They are practice examples written for this page so you can see the four parts in a full answer.

Does every sentence need a cue phrase?

The checker looks for short cues such as “at the time,” “I had to,” “I decided,” and “as a result.” A missing mark means that cue was not in the sentence.

Can I practice one out loud?

Yes. Paste your own answer into the checker, then start a free spoken mock. One short mock is free after you verify an email.
